Study for the written and driving test

Do you know the rules?

Everyone must pass a rules of the road written test and a behind-the-wheel driving test. To be prepared, it's important to study the California Driver Handbook which is available in multiple languages on the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website at www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/pubs.htm. There are also practice tests available for you to take.

Next Step: Gather Necessary Documents

2

Gather Necessary Documents

Identify yourself

Everyone applying for a CA driver license under the new law AB 60 will need to provide the DMV with proof of identity and California residency if they do not have satisfactory proof of legal presence. A list of approved documents is listed at www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/ab60/index

Next Step: Make an Appointment with DMV

3

Make an Appointment with DMV

Contact your local DMV office

Once you have studied and gathered the necessary documents, you will need to make an appointment before visiting a DMV Office. Once there you'll be able to:

  • Complete a driver license application form (DL 44)
  • Take a vision test, rules of the road test, and if applicable, a road sign test
  • Give a thumb print and have a picture taken that goes on the license.

If applicable, you can schedule a future appointment for the behind-the-wheel driving test.

After you receive your driver license, it is very important — and required by law — to get car insurance.
